my grandparents actually thought about things, i observed them. i dont know if this was generational. i suspect it's a holdover from culture before tv. it was almost like a specific act, like sex or eating. back then, thinking was a socially acceptable way of addressing obstacles and solving problems.

@Alex_Linder If you look into presidential debates prior to mass media, it's like another world. There's nothing even slightly comparable today. Total "hayseeds" would go to watch someone like Lincoln (also a total "hayseed" by the standards at the time) and watch 3+ hours of reasoned debate. Not one in ten current "Americans" could sit through such a debate, much less follow it.
